The Co-operative – Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS)
The Co-operative Group is the UK’s largest mutual business, owned by more than eight million members. It operates 3,500 outlets and employs nearly 70,000 people in activities including food retailing, insurance, funerals and legal services.
The Co-operative Group commissioned ENWORKS to undertake Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) audits across its large and varied estate in summer 2015. Over a three month period, the project surveyed nearly 200 sites across the country, from Essex to County Durham, and identified over 750 energy saving opportunities with a combined financial value of £1.1m and potential carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) savings of 5,150 tonnes.
Site surveys reviewed the potential for energy efficiency across a complex estate in a structured process, investigating; lighting, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, staff awareness and behavioural change. ENWORKS worked with the Co-Operative to develop and utilise its online Efficiency Toolkit to ensure consistency, traceability and data handling. Using this approach, opportunities identified across hundreds of sites could be tracked and reports produced summarising the financial and environmental benefits.
